Though they did not make my shortlist but I love these amazing hacks as well. They are among the most interesting, functional and well-crafted in 2012. Hope you like them as much as I do. Here goes:
Condo Perfect baby changing table - collapses to hide behind a door, flips open for a full sized changing table.
Lack shelf into coffee table - Great new use of the ubiquitous shelves. And nothing is wasted.
Besta photobooth - Out of the box, out in the field. And it takes photos.
Expedit reshuffled - Just a little tweak but it made the Expedit so much more gorgeous.
LEGO dining table - Two of my favourite brands together. Love, love.
A serious table for kids - Adjustable table for the would-be Frank Lloyd Wright.
Customised glass splashback - Kitchen magic from Rationell glass shelves and wallpaper.
Remove control storage Lack - A hack every home seriously needs.
Blanda Matt sings - Sexy speakers with all the right curves.
Work in a Box - Opens into a workstation, closes to hide everything.
Mandal LEGO storage - A fabulous storage system and so easy to do.
Space age TV - Because I love The Jetsons.

We have it! The KNUFF transformable coffee table is the IKEA Hack of 2012
Updated: 20 Jan
The votes are in and a big congratulations to imchaser, creator of the Knuff transformable coffee table! It was a clear winner with 25% of votes, while the Frosta X came in second with 14% and the Expedit extension next with 13% of votes. The Trunk Bar edged over the Karlstad sofa for fourth place with just 2 votes. What a close fight.
Thank you everyone who voted and made your choice known. Like one commenter said, we did have a bounty of good hacks in 2012 and it was a tough to choose just one. In the end, the originality and creativity of the Knuff hack won the day. Kudos, imchaser.
Prezzies! Yay!
The winner gets a choice of either:
a) A fully customized ODDA 3-drawer dresser (including the actual chest, which be will prePANYL for the winner using their newest custom "HackPack" concept. (This prize would be USA only).
b) $200 in PANYL gift certificates, which could be used towards merchandise and global shipping at PANYL.com.
If you're unsure what PANYL is, check out their website.
Till next year!

Vote for the IKEA Hack of 2012.
Every year, this is one of the toughest decisions I have to make - shortlisting my 10 favourite hacks for The IKEA Hack of the Year poll. Trust me, it is awfully hard to choose just 10 from so many clever, beautiful, useful and crazy hacks.
I thought about segregating the poll into 2 categories, as some suggested last year but decided not to. Let's keep things simple and focused, alright? After all, it's the best IKEA HACK that we want to crown.
Nevertheless, in the following days, I will be posting some worthy mentions - hacks that didn't make the shortlist but amazing, nonetheless. I'll also highlight some re-purposings/embellishments that are just too good to go unmentioned.
So, without further ado ... I present my top 10 favourite hacks of 2012 ... (in no particular order).
Tipsy over this trunk bar
Leather, metal and booze. What's not to like? This is the best bar hack I've seen. Two Besta units, leather, castors and some pretty clasp did it. Well done, Csaba. See more.
Sofa so good
Susanah designed a box frame around the Karlstad to transform it from meh to marvellous. I would buy this in a heartbeat if IKEA made this version of the Karlstad. See more.
X-treme makeover for Frosta
Andreas made 3 eye-popping hacks with the Frosta stools. I went back and forth between the X and the Z before deciding on this one for the top 10. The X could work as a shelving, a cat tree or even just as wall decor. See more.
A sexy catwalk
I've seen many cat-____ (fill in the blank with litter, tree, box, etc) but none as sleek as this one by Jason. The very pedestrian Hyllis shelving units were cut up and made model material. See more.
Knuff said
imchaser's coffee table was one of the most surprising hacks of 2012. Knuff magazine holders and a rotating artist stool make a beautiful combo. Better yet, the "table top" configuration can be changed by rearranging the magazine holders. See more.
Expedit extension
The Expedit is one of the most hacked range in IKEA. I love what Marie did to hers - the very pretty doors and super smart pull out counter top. Extra work space when you need it. See more.
Work out of a box
Enough of thinking out of the box. Brilliant work can happen inside a box too. Ian proved that with his roll away home office made from a IKEA steel kitchen work table. See more.
One for the guests
When space is a premium, hacks like Lynn's day-bed to full-sized-bed hack takes the cake. Such a simple, yet well thought out and executed solution to a common problem. See more.
See it in print
Charles' hack does not look pretty and perhaps many won't understand this or hack it. But as far as drawers go, this is the most innovative use of one that I have seen. See more.
Got to LVA this
A bed canopy, in Anke's hands, takes flight. I love how whimsical it is. See more.
That's my list. Which should take the IKEA Hack of the 2012 title? Tell me by clicking below.
Voting will end 16 January 2013 at 11.59pm (EST time).
PANYL, one of our site sponsors, is giving away their fantastic products to the winner of the Ikea Hack of 2012. PANYL is not your grandmother's contact film but a technological marvel, with hundreds of colors and organic, life-like woodgrains.
Better yet, PANYL is giving the winner a choice of either:
a) A fully customized ODDA 3-drawer dresser (including the actual chest, which be will prePANYL for the winner using their newest custom "HackPack" concept. (This prize would be USA only).
b) $200 in PANYL gift certificates, which could be used towards merchandise and global shipping at PANYL.com.

Billy-Benno library is the Ikea Hack of 2011!
First of all, a big thank you for voting. And yes, we have a winner! Congratulations to Chas for the awesome work on the Billy's, Benno's and miles of books. Chas' Billy-Benno library garnered 28% of votes, while Marloes' Rektangle vase bathroom wall came in at second, with over 23% of votes. A close fight to the end. The other favourite was Pippa's Skimmer soap dish, which pulled in 13% of votes.
This year's Ikea Hack of the Year kinda shifted things a little. No doubt, as some commented, repurposing/upcycling/whatever you call it is growing and does deserve a category of its own. Which may then leave "true-blue Ikea hacks" with a "purer" fight for the title. Definitely in the works for 2012.
O'verlays for the winner !
Besides bragging rights, Chas takes home a $150 gift card to spend at O'verlays. I have a feeling that the decorative fretwork panels will fit in beautifully in their French country house.
If you're not sure what O'verlays are, check out the photos of their creations below and their website too.

It's here! Vote for the Best Hack of 2011
It took some time to wade through the more than 1,000 hacks I received and posted this year! It's definitely a bumper year for IKEA Hackers. My initial shortlist was 82 hacks. Boy, was it tough to whittle my list down to 10. I know, some of your favourites may not be on the list. Do tell me your other favourites in the comments section. Anyways, let's roll (in no particular order) with the best of the best.
The Lobbo shines
I love what Vendela did to the simple Lobbo lamp shade. A modern "bird nest shade" with a stripes of Lobbo shade and lots of hard work. The result: Big impact. See more.
A desk that works
This workstation hack from Ritch and Ken is too gorgeous to leave out of the list. The polished Besta chrome underframes above and below makes all the difference. See more.
Rektangel vase bathroom wall
Some hate it, some like it. I think it took some really out of the box thinking by Marloes to use Rektangel vases instead of standard glass blocks. The result is pretty stunning too. See more.
Expedit standing desk
This year has to be the year of standing desks. I received and posted some of different shape and sizes. But this one from Peter stands out for its great use of the Expedit, plenty of working space, storage and sturdy, seamless look. See more.
A beauty in my books
I remember my jaws dropping when I first saw this hack by Chas, like I died and went to book heaven. Billy and Benno book cases beautifully merged for a floor to ceiling library. See more.
A hack to keep you warm
The Udden backsplash works just as well out of the kitchen. Very modern, very sleek. Well done, Shannon. See more.
Soap dish surprise
I thought long and hard whether to include this one by Pippa. On one hand, it is exceedingly simple. On the other, it's just brillant. Stuff that makes you go "Why didn't I think of that?" Useful and beautiful yet so easy to do. See more.
His and Hers Pax closets
Patrick had a challenging space with his Dutch colonial home. He definitely made lemonade out of it. Isn't this just gorgeous? See more.
Get fit hack
This has got to be the most innovative use of the Stolmen that I've seen thus far. Chev and Anthony attached the Tower 200 to the Stolmen system when they couldn't find a door to mount it. No excuse not to exercise now. See more.
Kids' computer station
David's brillant idea of using a Sandnes shoe cabinet as a computer station for 2 kids. And the ugly bits are all hidden in the lower shelf too. Who would have thought a shoe cabinet could be so much more? See more.
Alright! That's my top 10. Now over to you. Which deserves to the IKEA Hack of 2011? Tell me by voting below.
Voting will end 29 January 2012 at midnight (EST time).
A prize for the winner. Yay!
O'verlays have stepped in to sponsor the prize for the winner of the Ikea Hack of 2011. The winner will take home a $150 gift card to spend at their store. That amount could overlay a 6-drawer Malm or two three drawer Malms. Sweet! They make hacking so easy. If you're not sure what O'verlays are, check out the photos of their creations below and their website too.

Spotlight on Dean Wilson, winner of the Ikea Hack of 2010
![]() |
| I recently finished painting the Campbell's Soup mural in our kitchen using the same method as the Reservoir Dogs design, a projector, pencils, posca pens and paint. |
We've seen the winning hack. Let's get to know Dean, aka thedesignguy behind the gorgeous Pax sliding doors room divider.
More on the IKEA hack of 2010
IH: How did you come up with the idea for the Pax room divider?
Dean: When my girlfriend and decided to purchase our first apartment, we were fully aware that we couldn't afford anything much bigger then a studio. Both of us being fairly creative, we put our minds together found a well designed apartment and brainstormed how to make it a comfortable/functional living space.
IH: In constructing the hack, what was the toughest/most difficult portion?
Dean: The toughest part of the entire build was actually not the plan nor the mounting of the doors; those aspects of the build came together surprisingly easy. It was more the fact that as I had never built anything before; as a result I researched via the net, questioned employees at hardware stores and asked friends for advise. One of those friends was my girlfriend's brother who was an expert at building and gave me some insight into what to look out for. The number 1 being; cracks. The room was going to be combination of the already standing concrete walls, jip rock and ply wood. To prevent cracks from forming while joining the different materials, Sebastian recommended I wrap the entire room in a fibreglass type wallpaper before painting (which in Sweden is called microlit).
Now; I barely know the names of different building materials in English but trying to explain them in Swedish to the hardware store employees was quite the task. Needless to say I left the hardware store with a woven structure fibreglass wallpaper instead of the thin lining I should have. I then covered the entire room only to notice as I start to paint and discover the woven structure in the finish. As hard as it was to put up, it was harder to pull down but the benefit of renovating at home was not needing to wear appropriate clothing. Unfortunately I learnt my lesson the hard way, playing with fibreglass in your underwear is not something I would recommend.
IH: Did the room divider boost the sale when you wanted to sell your apartment?
Dean: Definitely! We believe the most important factor was that the bedroom was custom built to snugly accommodate a double bed and a small cupboard which left the remaining portion of the room to be a nice large living area. We expected to make a small profit from the improvements we had made to the apartment but never anticipated the 45+% increase on what we paid for the apartment a year before.
IH: What's with the Reservoir Dogs mural? A big fan?
Dean: A very big fan but I also liked the idea of completing the room's design with a simple piece of artwork, unfortunately my girlfriend didn't agree after she woke up rather tired without her glasses; she got a bit of a fright to say the least.
IH: Tell us a bit about yourself
Dean: I'm 24, Australian, have always had a big interest in all forms of design. Moved to Sweden (after meeting my girlfriend in Australia). Starting working in hotels (as fluent Swedish wasn't required). I later tried to start a freelance design company (thedesignguy.se) but struggled to get it off the ground with only a few clients. Since then I have continued my career within hotels which I enjoy; and I design (whether it's interior design, video editing, playing with photoshop or painting a mural) whenever I get the chance.
IH: Where do you live?
Dean: The beautiful city of Stockholm, once you get past the long winters you really learn to love the charm that is capital of Scandinavia. Not to mention living just a few minutes from the biggest IKEA in the world!
IH: What do you do for a living?
Dean: I am currently the Front Office Manager of a 5 star hotel.
IH: What's your favourite IKEA item?
Dean: It would have to be the Fusion dining set because compact living is a way of life in Stockholm and without the very neat, affordable well designed dining table and chairs my wife and a good majority of our friends would be forced to eat on the sofa.
IH: What do you like most about IKEA?
Dean: Apart from the 5 SEK slice of pizza at the end of every visit? I like the displays, IKEA 'Kungens Kurva' has a huge selection of displays showcasing IKEA furniture and accessories in a mock up environment. More recently focusing on mock ups of entire apartments; with limited space they give shoppers great inspiration and affordable solutions for functional compact living.
IH: Do you have a lot of IKEA in your home?
Dean: There are almost unsaid rules in Sweden for how much IKEA is acceptable. These 'rules' help to prevent you from having an identical apartment to all of your friends and family. My understanding of this rule is IKEA everything except: your living room table, a selection of lights, an arm chair or 2 and the odd shelf. So that's exactly what we have. Beds, drawers, cupboards, shelves, glasses, plates, cutlery, pillows, sheets, curtains, dressing gowns, towels, slippers, soap, Tupperware and pretty much everything else you can think of.... IKEA! Of course an array of small artifacts, ornaments and accessories from different sources provides the space with some balance and prevents the apartment from looking like IKEA vomited in your house.
IH: Are there any other hacks in your home?
Dean: Well, we recently built a custom 'four poster' bed frame with curtains (mounted in the ceiling) because we have a 2m wide bed and IKEA's EDLAND frame would not fit our mattress, but I don't think it makes the cut for IKEA Hackers
IH: What makes you hack or the reasons you hack?
Dean: Functionality and customisation. Finding solutions for space saving and optimal functionality is so easy when you can assess a problem; be as creative as you can; come up with the solution; go to IKEA and find products similar to those you dreamed up and get to work. What makes it all possible? IKEA is so cheap, you can afford to try and and even afford to make a mistake.
IH: What/Who inspires you to hack?
Dean: It would have to be a combination of my beautiful, smart; wife's input and always thinking outside the box. Settling is too easy, success requires a good idea, a trip to IKEA and a bit of sweat!
IH: Are there any current hack projects you are working on?
Dean: We are currently building a walk-in closet in one of our bedrooms which we have not finished planning but we are contemplating on incorporating a STOLMEN storage system and quite possibly a set of PAX sliding doors. You'll all have to keep your eyes peeled ;)

And we have an IKEA hack of 2010 winner!
Big congratulations and a round of applause to thedesignguy for winning the IKEA Hack of 2010!
His hack the Pax sliding door room divider was a clear favourite from the start. At some point, G.V.M's Bedroom dress boys almost overtook it but at the last lap, the Pax sliding door room divider pulled away to win big, with over 28% votes. The dressboys garnered 19% votes, with the Ultimate twin highchair at 16%. For me, every hack in the Top 10 list is way excellent and you did awesome.
This year, I am also super happy that we crossed the 5 thousand votes mark, hitting a grand total of 5,283 votes, up from last year's 4059. Thank you, thank you, everyone who picked your favourite and made your choice known.
As a small token from me, thedesignguy wins two of Jonathan Adler's latest books, Happy Chic Accessorizing
