iPoise


Materials: TERTIAL lamp, 4world iPad bracket

Description: Taking the TERTIAL lamp (£8.50) from Ikea remove the lamp fitting and flatten bracket

Then take 4world iPad holder, position the bracket in the centre of the rotating disc, drill a couple of holes get a couple of small bolts nuts and washers.


Fit the bracket and there you have it a multi-positional iPad bedside holder for less than 20 quid!

A TERTIAL chandelier


Materials: IKEA Tertial lamp, black MDF, table leg, steel wire & wireclamps, nuts & bolts TOOLS: Drill, Screwdrivers, Jigsaw

Description: Dear IKEA - Inspired by Ingo Mauers "Dear Ingo" I wanted to make a cool, modern looking chandelier that didn't have to be expensive. So I did - Out of IKEA Tertial lamps a Table leg and some black MDF plates. (edited 15 Feb 2013)

1. Start with the shopping, it actually takes longer than I expected. Primarily due to the fact that I didn't really know where I would end up, when I started.

You will need the following materials:
- A sheet of black MDF or basic plywood 400x1200mm, 16mm thickness, (you can choose to paint it afterwards)
- A table leg apx. 700mm long Ø25-30
- 12 IKEA Tertial Lamps
- Wood glue
- Various screws
- 1.5m steel wire + 2 wireclamps (for safety reasons)
- 1x M8 bolt 30mm
- Eye nut M8
- 1x M6 Eye bolt and 2x nuts and 2x washers
- 5x dual wire-terminals
- A car (To go and get the things you didn't know you needed)



And these tools:
- Jigsaw
- Drill (Ø3, Ø8, Ø13)
- Screwdrivers
- Sand paper (Or belt sander)

2. Cut out the MDF/plywood in three ؘ360mm plates. Draw lines on one of the plates where the lamps have to go - the drawing should look like a watch with 12 marks. Draw the lines through the center in 30 deg increments.

REMEMBER TO PUT ONE OF THE CIRCULAR PLATES ASIDE - IT WILL FORM THE BOTTOM OF THE LAMP.

3. Draw another circle Ø300 - The holes for the lamps should be drilled where this circle intersects the 12 lines. Draw a final circle Ø240 which marks the part in the middle which has to be cut out so you get a ring. Glue and screw two of the plates together so you have one plate that's 400 by 400mm and 32mm thick. (Make sure the screws doesn't interfere with the holes for the lamps). Cut out the plates.

4. Drill 12 holes in the 32mm ring where the lamps have to go. Afterwards glue and screw the ring on the last circular plate forming the base of the lamp.

5. Drill a small hole in the center (ؘ6). This is where the eye bolt will be mounted for safety reasons. Drill holes in the table leg for the electrical wire and the safety wire. See images for details.

6. Pull the safety wire and the electrical wire through the table leg, and mount the table leg on the base. (I've glued and screwed a small circular piece of MDF in the middle of the base to have more material to screw the table leg into)

7. Depending on the type of table leg you use, there are different ways of mounting the eye bolt in the top. (I've chosen to mount it on the plastic part and to secure it with rivets)

8. Before mounting the lamps in the base, cut the wires in the desired length and strip the wires. Mount the lamps afterwards. Set up the wires in the terminals - 3 lamps for 1 terminal. See picture.

9. Mount the lamp and light it up

E-Reader Boom


Materials: 
- TERTIAL desk lamp
- Exogear Exomount car holder
- Mounting tape
- LED Reading lamp (optional)

Description: I'm too lazy to hold my E-Reader in bed :)
- Unplug the lamp!
- Cut and remove electrical wiring from TERTIAL. Hint: To remove the bulb socket, you need to lift two opposite tabs on the outside of the socket, but it's optional. And be careful of the sharp edges.



- Line the clamping area with anti-slip tape, then attach Exomount there.
- Attach E-Reader (or small tablet) to the Exomount suction cup.
- You can store reading glasses etc where the socket used to be.

PS: Maximum gadget weight ~300g

TERTIAL lamp with a new lease of life


Materials: TERTIAL Lamp

Description: For my father's 64th birthday, I wanted to make him an LED table lamp.

I have quite a few unused TERTIAL lamps from IKEA and thought I'd give them a new lease of life.

The lamp was easy enough to dismantle and by prying the black plastic pieces at the end of the metal tubes, you can effectively remove the existing wiring and re-feed another set of cables. For the lights to fire sequentially, I needed a cable with 4 wires.



Micro-controller duties was handled by the ATTINY2313v which I programmed by using the Arduino as the programmer.

I used an old wooden pencil case (which I bought in 1994!) for the headlamp. The LED strips fit perfectly.

I also hooked it up to 3 blue LEDs to give a visual cue of the settings of the light.

Dear Ingo-inspired chandelier hacked from 8 Tertial Worklamps


Materials: 8 X Tertial Work Lamps, 20mm thick board cut into a disc, threaded rods X 3

Description:
Always loved the look of Dear Ingo chandelier but could never bear to spend that kind of money so I got creative and voila!

1) Get a piece of 20mm thick timber board cut into a disc and have it stained dark

2) Clamp on 8 numbers of Tertial Work Lamps in equal distance around the disc and have all the wires connected so that it they turn on together (I had a handy electrician friend to help with this part of the work)


3) Drill 3 holes around the centre of the disc and secure the 3 threaded rods

4) Have the whole chandelier secured to the ceiling with the 3 threaded rods


5) Connect the wires and throw the switch

6) Position all the work lamps as desired

7) Invite some friends over and enjoy the accolades!

Note: would have looked better if the Tertials were spray-painted but I couldn't find the energy to do that.

Tertial Chandelier

Tertial Chandelier

Materials: Tertial lamps, aluminum square tube, electric connectors, 1,5 mm wire

Description: I started by reversing the lamp holder position of 6 Tertial lamps so that they could rotate down when the chandelier was in the ceiling. To do that I had to remove de lamp holders, turn them around and reconnect them. The plugs were cut off.


I used a 5 cm square aluminum tube 140 cm long and made two eyelets for ceiling hanging.

The holes for the lamps are 40 cm apart (10 cm from edges); the lamps were secured in position with 1,5 mm thick wire rings attached to their spokes.
The cables were connected and the chandelier was ready!

iPhone 4 Camera Mount from Ikea Desk Lamp


Materials: 2 * 70mm M5 bolt; 8 * M5 nut; 2 * 70mm * 10mm * 2mm aluminium bar; 2 * suction cup (I used suction cup hooks and removed the hook parts); 1 * Ikea Tertial lamp; Drill / Drill press; 5mm, 3.5mm drill bits; Flat head screw driver; Pliers

Description: Drill 2 * 5 mm holes about 10 mm in from each end of the aluminium bars.

In one of the bars, drill 2 * 3.5mm holes to match the lamp mount

Remove the wire and the whole lamp assembly from the lamp. Retain the bolts that attach the mount to the lamp head.

Using pliers, slightly bend the mount so the bolt holes are flat.

Using the saved lamp bolts, bolt the 4 hole piece of aluminium bar to the lamp.

Bolt the suction cups to the 2 hole piece of aluminium bar with the 70mm bolts and 4 nuts.

Using 4 more nuts, bolt the suction cup part to the lamp mount, and you're all done!

Enjoy your new steady filming! Also works really well for mounting the iPhone as a video podcast camera.

Very Flexible Computer Speaker Mounts


Materials: TERTIAL Work Lamp

Description: The inexpensive TERTIAL work lamp ($9 USD) functions as an excellent arm to mount light objects. I always like my computer speakers to be at a certain height for better sound. Freeing my desk of addition speaker wires is even better.

The construction is easy. Unscrew the light socket and snip off the wires. They can be pulled out of the metal arms with a set of pliers. Attaching your speakers to the metal plate is the most challenging. Bend the concave plate so it is flat. I drilled a two holes into my speakers and plugged them with a drywall anchor that was cut short. Find a small screw and the drywall anchor will act as some sturdy self-made threading as you fasten the screw.


Now you can articulate your speakers in whatever way that hits your ear just right. I like to point the speakers towards me when I am in another part of my apartment, so it doesn't just work for optimizing your sound at your desk.

Ikea iPhone Stand


Materials: IKEA TERTIAL LAMP, iPod base.

Description:
Finally, we made the iPhone base we were needing to make better Arduino tutorial videos.

It's a simple IKEA Hack of an extensible lamp. We remove the lamp head but keeping the base of the head.

We also remove the screw for the head and use an 90 angle from the hardware store and attached it to the base with another screw.

We secure this 90� angle to an iPod/iPhone base and we have it!

Hack a Tertial lamp into a mic stand


Materials: Tertial Lamp

Description: The first step to making a microphone stand from the Tertial Lamp was to remove the light fixture. I tried to figure out how to remove the light so that I could still use it, but instead I had to cut the cord and pull it out of the boom arm.

I then unscrewed the lamp fixture from the arm and put aside all the hardware.

I removed the microphone and shock mount from the stand it came with and tried to put it onto the boom arm. The plastic spacer from the lamp was too thick to fit the microphone, so I had to file it down so that it was thin enough to fit between the shock mount and the lamp stand.


Once the spacer was thin enough I attached the shock mount to the lamp stand using the bolt and nut that used to hold in the lamp head. I then used cable ties to attach the microphone cable to the stand (not visible in the photos).

The stock hardware that comes with the Tertial lamp isn't strong enough to hold the stand straight when I extend the lamp arm. My next step will be to buy new hardware for the lamp arm so that it can support my microphone and shock mount.
